Phillips unveils major Hong Kong auction highlights in Taipei preview
Kusama Yayoi work reflecting on the COVID pandemic a highlight of sale
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Phillips has announced the highlights of its upcoming Modern & Contemporary Art Sales, with a public preview scheduled at Taipei’s Bellavita over the weekend.
The selection bridges 20th-century masters, offering collectors a rare view of museum-quality works before they head to auction in Hong Kong on March 29.
The preview features a dialogue between established icons and boundary-pushing artists, including a significant showcase of Japanese masters.
Leading the sale is Kusama Yayoi’s “Sunset Afterglow Inside My Heart,” a work of exceptional rarity appearing at auction for the first time. Distinguished by its evocative title and signature red-and-white palette, the canvas reflects the artist’s feelings during the global pandemic and carries an estimate of NT$20.5 million (US$638,000) to NT$28.7 million.
There is also Liu Dan’s (劉丹) monumental watercolor “Dictionary,” which reimagines the book with a meticulous ink technique. It is estimated to fetch NT$14.35 million to NT$22.55 million.
Meanwhile, Tracey Emin’s “I See the Mirror” is estimated at NT$14.35 million to NT$18.45 million, and Murakami Takashi’s “Untitled” — which utilizes platinum leaf to elevate his “Superflat” aesthetic — is estimated at NT$9.02 million to NT$14.35 million.
Impressionist master Pierre-Auguste Renoir is represented by the luminous landscape “Paysage aux Oliviers,” a rare Mediterranean scene from his mature period, estimated at NT$8.2 million to NT$12.3 million.
